The Israeli army launched a 22-day offensive on the Gaza Strip on December 27, 2008, killing at least 1,166 Palestinian civilians. The massacre was condemned by the United Nation's Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict, chaired by the Jewish South African Justice Richard Goldstone, which found Israel guilty of war crimes and possible crimes against humanity for the use of white phosphorous bombs against Palestinian civilians, among others.
